Office supplies and furniture

How do you set up a workspace without spending money you need elsewhere?

Furnishing a space is where a lot of early money quietly goes. Most of it can wait. A little of it should not, because the wrong chair costs more than the right one.

Buy the chair, wait on the rest

If you sit in it every day, it is worth real money. Desks, storage and decor can be secondhand, borrowed or postponed without anyone noticing. Try a chair before buying it, and buy it from somewhere that will still be there if something breaks.

Measure before you order anything large

Doorways, corners and ceiling height end more furniture deliveries than budgets do. Measure the route in as well as the room, and ask whether delivery includes carrying it in and putting it together or stops at the curb.

Ask about a business account before the first order

A local supplier will usually set up an account with terms, delivery and consistent pricing, which matters more than a single low price once you are ordering every month. Ask what it takes to open one and what it changes.

Work out what you can share rather than own

A conference room you need occasionally, a printer you use rarely, a space to meet a client somewhere that is not your kitchen. Renting these by the hour is usually cheaper than owning them, and it is one of the things the Hub is for.

Before you spend anything

What to have settled first.

  • A chair you have actually sat in
  • Doorways and the route in, measured
  • Delivery and assembly confirmed, not assumed
  • A list of what you can rent instead of buy

Still deciding?

Bring the question to the Hub. Talking it through with somebody who has watched other owners make the same call is usually quicker than reading more about it.
